It all started with an innocent, kind gesture from the coworker next to me. “You seem stressed”, he said, “take a drag”. He slid his Juul over to me. A device I was all too familiar with, but never too intrigued by. I took a hit. And with that, I joined the wave. I now smoke less than 3 cigarettes a day. Before that I was smoking at least a full pack every two days. Sounds like a success story right? I’m not so sure just yet. Am I cutting down? Or am I really just replacing the habit with another one that is just as unhealthy? So therein lies the root of our question. Is smoking a Juul better than cigarettes in the first place? Or am I just replacing a bad habit with an equally (or maybe worse) habit? Juul vs Cigarettes… let us begin.
I hit my Juul at on the way to the office, at the office, on the way out of the office. Indoors while I watch TV. As I write this article, I’m huffing on my new favorite toy. The hot new craze among degenerates. The Juul. I wonder if I smoke more now because of it due to the convenience. I think it’s fair to say that is likely true, it’s just very hard to get a handle on how much you actually are ripping it. Before long it’s an autopilot motion. Like biting your nails or scratching your head.
The green light from the great gatsby was from a juul

So let’s get to the bottom of this, is vaping straight nicotine out of a Juul better than smoking it after it’s been rolled in tobacco? Am I actually doing my lungs any favors?
There seems to be a general consensus among this-
“Remember, we’re talking about harm reduction here, not harmlessness. They’re totally different. The JUUL wasn’t designed to be healthy, but rather it was designed to be less unhealthy than cigarettes. I would say it accomplished that. Cigarettes have over 7,000 chemicals in them (1). Admittedly, big tobacco set the bar pretty low.
Having less than 7,000 chemicals and 69 carcinogens isn’t really a hard mark to beat.” – Vape Pen Starter
These guys make a good point here. Yes, they are vape salesman so take their advice as you will, but you can’t deny that making a product that is “healthier” than a cigarette is not a monumental task when you consider the amount of toxins and harmful chemicals that go into it’s production. So while the Juul isn’t “healthy”, one could claim smoking a Juul is “healthier” than smoking cigarettes. But don’t get that twisted, to reiterate, so far it seems that cigarettes are so bad for you, it’s not hard to make something that is a healthier substitute. Even if only slightly.
This is further confirmed by a doctor (for those of you that aren’t persuaded by a Vape Pen Starter website)
“Electronic cigarettes are without a doubt safer than regular cigarettes and the immediate harms from using them have been minimal so far,” Dr. Michael Siegel, professor of community health sciences at Boston University, tells BuzzFeed News. That being said, just because e-cigarettes are safer than tobacco cigarettes it doesn’t mean they are harmless.” – BuzzFeed
I hate to quote BuzzFeed (forgive me) but they have the quotes from an actual doctor. We have the word of the vape vendors, and now we have the word of a medical professional. Smoking a Juul better than smoking a cigarette? So far it looks that way.
But I’m not convinced. This is straight nicotine isn’t it? Is there not an inherent danger in this concept of condensed nicotine that can be vaped discreetly indoors or outdoors by kids of all ages? There has to be some threshold where this level of convenience becomes a danger. At least cigarettes have that cosmetic con of reeking like a guy who is purposely slowly killing himself. There has to be SOME repercussion with the Juul.
Now the reason all the local news stations, teachers, and parents are freaking out over the Juul craze is it’s unbelievable discreetness.
That thing is small. And it packs a punch. Once the vapor clears there is no odor or trail. If you mess up and realize there is a teacher right around the corner, you can hold it all in until it dissolves into your lungs. (I’m sure that’s fine health wise).
Juul VS Cigarettes
“Unlike many e-cigarettes that claim to deliver nicotine equivalent to that of a pack of cigarettes in each cartridge, the JUUL actually should be a one-to-one exchange for someone who currently smokes a pack of cigarettes per day.” – Vape Grl
So when it comes to nicotine, the Juul has less nicotine than cigarettes. BUT contains a higher percentage than many other e-cigarettes on the market.
Wait we have one more chart for you on this Juul vs Cigarettes discussion in terms of nicotine. This one comes frm E-Cig One:
So now we can come to at least one conclusion:
the Juul is the WORST E-cig you can smoke. But it still has less nicotine than a cigarette.
My only concern now lies in what else is in these magical pods. And for that, who better to turn to than Juul themselves–
After years of research, JUUL Labs developed its proprietary e-liquid formula, which is mixed under strict quality controlled processes utilizing industry leading U.S. partners.
Our ingredients include glycerol, propylene glycol, natural oils, extracts and flavor, nicotine and benzoic acid.
- Glycerol and Propylene Glycol have commonly used humectants in vaporization liquids, and also used in a number of consumer products like toothpaste.
- Benzoic Acid is a naturally occurring acid found in the tobacco plant, which is a part of our proprietary formulation that makes JUUL the ultimate vaping experience.
- As a policy, our development and manufacturing process does not add diacetyl and acetylproprionyl (or 2,3-pentanedione) as flavor ingredients.
- Nicotine content: 0.7mL with 5% nicotine by weight (59 mg/mL per pod, ~ content of a pack of cigarettes). If you have further questions or concerns about the health impact of vaping we recommend you contact a health care professional.
If you have further questions or concerns about the health impact of vaping or ingestion of nicotine, we recommend that you consult with your health care professional.
So Juul vs Cigarettes. Is smoking a Juul better than cigarettes? Safe to say, the jury is out on this one. The questions of whether smoking a Juul better than cigarettes is one that depends on the individual, and the true answer to it may not be found for years to come. If you already smoke cigarettes and have no intention of stopping, you’re likely going to just double your nicotine intake.
If you use it as a tool to try and cut out smoking, with an actual game plan to end it, then is smoking a juul better than cigarettes? So far, probably.
