So much about this episode to write about. A Bojack Horseman season 4 episode 11 analysis is needed ASAP. I may go back into this later, but right now I want to focus on the impressive intricacies of Beatrice’s senile dream-state. Absolutely amazing.
The fact that they perfectly illustrated dream sequence and how it is experienced by the individual is astounding. BoJack Horseman allowed the viewer to get a true glimpse into what a flashback looks like to an aging individual. And now we can see that it isn’t too far off from the episodes all individuals experience when they are in-between a waking/dreaming state. Anyone who is familiar with lucid dreaming or sleep paralysis has experienced this. Many of you, as you read on, may realize that you have experienced these phenomenons while dreaming as well.
Now sure, they did this through exploring the mind of an aging woman going senile. BUT, If you look at the strategies to achieve lucid dreaming you can get a real good idea on what makes a dreamstate, and the astoundingly similar traits all individuals dreams have.
Before we get into those traits let’s look at some constant, and strange traits of Beatrices memory:
Two things to note. First, check the exit sign. It is written in reverse, like how you would see it in a mirror.
Second- everyone’s faces. Everyone who is a non-important character to the story is just a blank face. Henreitta is given a scribbly mark. I believe this may be because Beatrice hated her, and did her best to forget her face. So unlike the blank faces she never remembered, Henrietta’s was one she had to scribble out. A Bojack Horseman season 4 episode 11 analysis could be made just about that to be honest…
*Further evidence of this: The other individuals with scribbled out faces were the butlers that were throwing her toys and eventually her doll into the fire. Other faces she hates and wants to forget about.
Here is my favorite part of the epsidode. Check the above screencap. ‘Grand Hotel’ spelt out correctly.
Now, there is a quick glitch and flick of the lettering. Most viewers may not have noticed. It now reads “GRNAD HOTEL”.
And after another flicker we are left with “GRNAD HETOL”.
According to numerous lucid dreaming site there are multiple accepted strategies to realize if you are dreaming. The lists vary but the main ideas remain constant. Here is one for you to quickly read through. The link is below but fair warning, all these lucid dreaming sites seem a little ‘culty’…for lack of a better word. Anyway the list:
- Breathe – Can you hold your nose and mouth shut and breathe?
- Jump – When you jump, do you float back down?
- Read – Can you read a sentence twice without it changing?
- Look – Is your vision clearer or blurrier than normal?
- Hand – Can you push hand through a solid surface?
- Time – Can you read a clock face or digital watch?
- Fly – Can you will yourself to fly or hover above the ground?
- Palms – Do the palms of your hands look normal close-up?
- Mirrors – Does your reflection look normal in the mirror?
- Math – Can you add up two numbers for a correct answer? –
Reading through that list you probably can already see some points that remind you of the episode.
Paintings for example change in the background before your eyes, anytime a traumatizing topic is brought up to Beatrice (her mothers lobotomy, her burning doll) result in a glitch and quick flash, a nonsensical surreal series of events that could only be conjured up by a racing, anxious mind trapped in a dream-state.
As the list mentions, faces do not look normal in dreams, vision is blurred, sentences and words do not read the same at second glance. All of these are illustrated in episode 11 in such an impressive manner.
Illustrating the experience of the dream state is incredibly difficult. Even so, it is attempted all the time in TV and film. A qucik BoJack Horseman Season 4 Episode 11 analysis had to be done because this was one of the best representations of the common dream state that I have ever seen. More Bojack Horseman season 4 episode 11 analysis may need to be done in the near future. Once I let this season sink in. Which by the way.. season 4? 7/5 stars. Unbelievable…
Vulture had a great analysis as well if you are looking for further reading on this!
