News broke about 6 hours ago that there had been a shooting at a Mosque in Quebec – this all happening less than 48 hours after Canada had announced they would increase their intake of refugees. In one what some would call an untimely twist, the Quebec shooting suspects are possibly Muslim themselves.
“Six people have been killed and eight injured at a mosque in Québec City, police have said, in a shooting Canada’s prime minister denounced as a “terrorist attack” (Guardian)”
As expected, Twitter and Facebook users are up in arms. Advocates on the right and left are at each-others throats. Speculations are being thrown around with both sides grasping at straws, hoping for the outcome that will fit their narrative. A narrative they have been pushing to justify for almost a year now. This applies to both sides. The trenches have been dug.
Conservatives have been sharing an unconfirmed speculation that the suspects in custody are named Bashir al-Taweed and Hassan Matti.
It seems highly unlikely this report will be confirmed. The shooters being Syrian refugees would be a wet dream for an alt-righter.
So far, the only thing we know for sure is this was an act of hate.
There are many unconfirmed reports at the moment from eye witnesses at the scene. Initial reports hinting at the identity of the suspects was first cited by Radio-Canada.
““It seemed to me that they had a Quebecois accent. They started to fire, and as they shot they yelled, ‘Allahu Akbar!’ The bullets hit people that were praying. People who were praying lost their lives. A bullet passed right over my head,” said the witness. News AU”
As of now, two suspects are in custody. It is curious to humor the notion that Quebec-Muslims perpetrated the attack. That’s not to say this wouldn’t be the first case of Muslim-on-Muslim violence, but the act seems quite uncharacteristic of Quebec natives, regardless of religious background.
Other less-than-reliable sources have announced that one shooter is a Syrian refugee, the other, a Quebec born Muslim. Which would point to the speculation that the Quebec shooting suspects are possibly Muslim.
It appears (as expected) that the liberals are looking to pin this attack as an anti-Muslim hate crime, ideally committed by a loony Trump supporter who wandered over the border with an AK-47. On the other hand, conservatives are expecting to hear the attack was committed by a radical Muslim. At the time, it appears the latter is more likely.
Supporters of Trump’s ban and alt-right members alike have been sharing what they refer to as “Coulter’s Law” (perhaps ironically) as evidence to the likely racial background of the shooter.
Although it’s best to usually ignore anything written by Ann Coulter, this tweet actually seems to ring true.
Further details on this story will surely break as the day goes on. Mirror has now also confirmed that the shooters had yelled “Allahu Akbar” as they opened fire on the mosque. While this is nothing definitive, it does suggest that the Quebec shooting suspects are possibly Muslim.
